My love of nature and the outdoors was sparked as a young girl by the many camping and fishing trips with my dad and older brothers. I currently live on Puget Sound, surrounded by its rustic beauty. I studied art at Brigham Young University, and Gyotaku with Yoshiko Takahashi, a master printer and teacher from Japan. My interest in Gyotaku began after studying the book written by Japanese artist Yoshio Hyama.
In preparation
for printing, I read about the species first, because understanding fish structure
and its ecology is vital to successful printing. I often take artistic liberties
when I print. I've been creating fish prints since 1977. In addition to
printing fish, I also use other materials in my work.
My work has been featured on several television
programs, and used as illustrations for magazine and other articles as well
as in print advertising. I have also taught workshops on the art of Gyotaku
and given hands-on demonstrations on how to print. It has been fun and
rewarding to take my Gyotaku knowledge and appreciation of marine life into
the community and the public schools. I have printed on a government research
vessel of the NOAA Fleet and am a member of the Nature Printing Society, an
international printing organization based in the United States.
