Skates are primarily
bottom dwellers, but can
dart swiftly using their large wing like pectoral
fins in undulating motion for graceful underwater
propulsion. Their colors are usually shades of
brown and gray, mottled so as to blend well
with the bottom. When they rest, they fan the
sand as they settle so that only their eyes and
spiracles are above the surface. By forming a
suction with their body, they can cling to the
bottom so tightly they are difficult to dislodge.
Skates usually feed on shellfish and crustaceans,
using their flat pavement like teeth to crush the
shells. This skate was taken from the Puget
Sound in the Northwest.
